Eco Church – What’s that??

You can be an Eco Warrior you if you wish!

Are you concerned about climate change? Many of us are – and government is concerned too. The problem is there seems to be lots of things to do but we are not sure where to start and how to do it properly.

  • For example if you are walking in the street and you see some litter on the floor what would you do? It’s all a bit dirty and there may not be a bin around.
  • Methane is a gas from cows and rotting bio-waste. It is over 20 times worse than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas
  • So – what is a bio-digester?
  • Do you know our dustbin waste, if taken to the Portsmouth disposal site, is burned at 800 degrees C? The ash is used for road making.
  • Ever wondered if your margarine tub is recyclable?
  • How much palm oil is in your “Olive” margarine?
  • Why do some councils collect food waste and others don’t?
  • Are crisp packets recyclable?
  • Recycling symbols – what do they mean?

These and many other questions abound and we haven’t got answers to a lot of them. But take heart – many people are wondering too. Let’s make a start…

Have you heard of Eco Church?

Eco Church is an award scheme designed to motivate and resource churches in England and Wales to care for God’s earth as part of their everyday work and witness. … Once a church has amassed sufficient points, they will qualify for an Eco Church Award at Bronze, Silver or Gold level.

It is supported by A Rocha and is UK’s award scheme for churches in England and Wales who want to demonstrate that the gospel is good news for God’s earth.

To be an Eco Warrior…

Have a look at the website:  https://ecochurch.arocha.org.uk/denominational-awards/eco-district/

And when you have looked at it have a go, talk to people and in the words of the letter of James Chapter 2 verse 18 which says:

But someone will say, “One person has faith, another has actions.” My answer is, “Show me how anyone can have faith without actions. I will show you my faith by my actions.”
