ELEMENTAL 2026: Twelve Years On, Still Missio Dei

Back in 2014, when our Circuit first sent a tent into the middle of Wickham Festival, the team spoke of being engaged in Missio Dei, trusting that God the Holy Spirit was already active in people’s lives, and that our task was simply to join in what God was already doing. Twelve years on, that’s still exactly what Elemental is.

From the outset, the tent was built to be a place where everyone could belong, whoever walked in. No one was asked what they believed, where they came from, who they loved, or what shape their body or mind took, before being offered a seat, a drink, or a listening ear. That welcome is not an add-on to our mission; it is the mission. A tent that only felt safe for some people wouldn’t be incarnational at all, it would just be another closed door.

Serving outside our own church walls has always come at a cost: no confirmed pitch until the last minute, no control over where we’d be placed, the strange experience of being guests in someone else’s festival. In many ways, nothing has changed. We still turn up not knowing quite what we’ll find, still rely on the trust and goodwill of festival organisers. That’s the nature of incarnational mission: going to where people already are, on their terms, not ours, and making room for people exactly as they come.

The name itself has held its meaning all these years. “Elemental” bridges the festival world and the church: gentle, non-confrontational, rooted in earth, wind, fire and water, yet pointing beyond them to Christ as more elemental than the elements themselves. This year’s tent, decked in hanging’s and colour, still did exactly that job: a space festival-goers of every background could walk into without knowing quite what to expect, and leave having encountered something real.

This year’s four days (30th July to 2nd August) carried the same spirit as that original vision: hospitality offered freely; open spirituality on offer through craft, conversation, and prayer, accessible to all ages and abilities; a Sunday Harvest service, this year led by our District Chair, echoing that very first Elemental’s own Harvest Festival. Families crafted together, strangers became familiar faces over tea, and many came back more than once across the four days, just as festival-goers did that first year, whoever they were and wherever they’d come from.

None of it happens by accident. It takes months of planning, a good-sized and diverse team giving up their festival weekend, and a great deal of prayer before a single festival flag goes in. We’re still a small Circuit of five churches. We still, quietly, punch above our weight. And we’re still simply joining in with what God is already doing, for everyone who comes through the tent flap.
